DesignBay is a crowdsourcing marketplace for logo design, web design and graphic design. DesignBay helps businesses get 25 to 100+ designs from designers around the world.  Its mission is to give designers opportunities and to provide businesses with risk-free creativity.

DesignBay is one of 12 exhibitors being showcased at the Webciety section this year at CeBIT Australia 2009. DesignBay are holding a crowd sourcing experiment using Twitter during CeBIT which is a great concept that I hope gets a lot traction.

Task: Invent a tagline (with fewer than 100 characters) for Australia’’s 2018 Soccer World Cup Bid.  Tagline should summarise why Australia should be selected to host the World Cup.  View the taglines submitted so far here.

How to submit: send your 100 character tagline to Twitter by writing a Twitter message that starts with @DesignBay_com #webciety #aust-2018-cup.

Deadline: Midnight 14th May 2009

I’m always on the look out for productivity hacks. Twitter has become a part of my daily routine and something that if not managed correctly can hog your time and attention. Using some Web 2.0 applications, I’ve come up with a process to help improve your productivity for tweeting links, without having to leave your browser – I like to call it, “inline tweeting”

This system will improve your Twitter productivity:

• A lot of tweets from the people I’m following contain a link. Using this process you will save time in posting your links without having to open twitter.com or your desktop twitter application. Tagging with delicious will automatically grab the page title and the links saving you time in writing your message & shortening the URL
• By using twitter I find that I use my RSS readers a lot less. This process forces me to keep a good library of bookmarks in delicious which I can then read on my iPhone in Google Reader
• You don’t have to have twitter.com or any twitter app open allowing you to tweet whilst browsing without the distraction from other messages on twitter

Want to begin inline tweeting? Here’s the step-by-step process:

Step 1: Sign-up for Del.icio.us

• Create a delicious account – link to sign up page

Step 2: Install the Delicious Firefox add-on

• During the signup process, if you didnt install the del.icio.us Firefox add-on you can download it here

Step 3: Tagging your bookmarks

• When tagging a bookmark create a unique tag that will be used for posting that bookmark to Twitter – I use tweet as my tag.
  
• Log-in to your delicious account at delicious.com
• Click on your unique tag, in my case the tag “tweet”
• Click on “RSS Feed for these bookmarks”. This will open the RSS feed for all bookmarks tagged “tweet”. The URL of this RSS feed is important and will need to be pasted in to twitterfeed in the next step.
  

Step 4: Setup your Twitterfeed

• Visit twitterfeed.com
• Login using your preferred method
• Go to Create new twitter feed
• Type in your twitter username and password
• In the field, RSS Feed URL: paste in the URL of the RSS feed for your “tweet” tag from Step 3
• Change the update frequency to every 30 minutes, and to pust up to 5 new updates each time.
• On the Include… dropdown menu, change it to “title only”

• Once filled in, click “Create” and it will be setup!

Now that it’s setup, do some tagging in Firefox with the tag “tweet” and confirm they post to your Twitter account (Note: It takes about 1 hour for the first tweet to appear on your twitter profile)

Tips:

• You can automatically post to multiple twitter accounts by having a tag used specifically for each Twitter account. eg: tweetaccount1 & tweetaccount2 both producing their own unique RSS feed which can then be setup in twitterfeed.
• You can have Twitterfeed automatically shorten your URL’s using bit.ly (my preferred URL shortening service) by changing it to “Shorten link through bit.ly”.

Laurel Papworth (@silkcharm), an Australian social media expert; brings us the following interesting statistics on access to Social Networking websites in the workplace.

“Despite Australia’s laid back reputation, its workers are among the world’s most deprived of access to social networking sites according to 3 mobile’s INQ poll. in terrible traffic this morning

In the Australian survey, 55% of staff said their employers banned social networking websites such as Facebook and MySpace in the workplace, compared to 20% of workers in the UK, 12% in France, 11% in Spain, 10% in Germany and 6% in Italy.

Australian workers have therefore had to resort to subterfuge to continue networking on-the-job, such as:

• Almost 1 in 3 (28%) hide their screen from their boss so they can social network undetected

• 27% transfer personal messages into a work email to surreptitiously read social network posts

• 17% skip lunch breaks to justify time spent on social networks during the working day”

This week has been full of tech for me. I have finally moved on to a Apple MacBook as my primary computer.

I’m also writing this post from my Apple iPhone 3g. Good first impressions for both devices however compatibility with my normal software is a pain with the MacBook. I’ll keep you posted on my journey down infinite loop.

When Google launched Google Chrome – their take on the browser, naturally I was very interested to check it out as it could have some potential impact on me and my work.

Google Chrome in Siteflex

First thoughts? This thing looks slick and has some neat little features and quirks but what really had me impressed was the speed that it chomped through code (probably due to the new Javascript V8 engine). But that’s not what this post is about…

Out of the box, Google Chrome lacks some serious functionality and has caused me some frustration. Google (yes, you can hear me!) – fix these 5 things and I’ll be a lot happier:

1. RSS Compatability- I just can’t comprehend releasing a browser without RSS compatibility.  Mozilla Firefox managed my feeds nicely with Live! Bookmarks. I found this feature quite good as I could quickly flick down the bookmark to see if there was anything worth reading.
2. What about Firefox? – Google, where does your allegiance lie? You used Firefox and the community for all it’s worth and now you’ve turned your back on the only decent browser that has been able to put up a fight against IE.
3. Give me some menus! - Some things in life just need to be easy to access – menus were not created by Satan!
4. You killed my WYSIWYG - The powerful CMS Siteflex makes life very easy for me in updating websites – it’s WYSIWYG editor works perfectly in every browser except for… you guessed it, Google Chrome!
5. No plug-in’s or add-on support - First you take my RSS, now you take my plug-ins – give me back my freedom!

Google you’ve accomplished some major things over the last 10 years, but please take the extra week or so to make sure your products don’t frustate users from day one!

Google has just launched a new project called 10^100 calling for ideas that will change the world.

My first thoughts after reading this news immediately were ‘very cool!’… then I thought… probably not that original and unique – where had I seen this approach to idea generation before? Kevin Rudd (Australia’s current PM) ran the Australia 2020 Summit in April this year gathering ideas for the long term strategy for the nation.

Google has taken it a step up with 10^100 involving more than just 1000 industry experts like Rudd did, but instead asking the entire world to submit ideas in the following areas:

“Community: How can we help connect people, build communities and protect unique cultures?

Opportunity: How can we help people better provide for themselves and their families?

Energy: How can we help move the world toward safe, clean, inexpensive energy?

Environment: How can we help promote a cleaner and more sustainable global ecosystem?

Health: How can we help individuals lead longer, healthier lives?

Education: How can we help more people get more access to better education?

Shelter: How can we help ensure that everyone has a safe place to live?

Everything else: Sometimes the best ideas don’t fit into any category at all.”

$10 million is on the table to fund up to 5 ideas that are being reviewed by advisory board consisting of 7 experts in each of these fields.

I will keep you posted on this one – let’s hope that Google does a bit more than Kevin Rudd has with the ideas from the 2020 Summit (of which I haven’t heard much of!).
