Google has just launched a new project called 10^100 calling for ideas that will change the world.

My first thoughts after reading this news immediately were ‘very cool!’… then I thought… probably not that original and unique – where had I seen this approach to idea generation before? Kevin Rudd (Australia’s current PM) ran the Australia 2020 Summit in April this year gathering ideas for the long term strategy for the nation.

Google has taken it a step up with 10^100 involving more than just 1000 industry experts like Rudd did, but instead asking the entire world to submit ideas in the following areas:

“Community: How can we help connect people, build communities and protect unique cultures?

Opportunity: How can we help people better provide for themselves and their families?

Energy: How can we help move the world toward safe, clean, inexpensive energy?

Environment: How can we help promote a cleaner and more sustainable global ecosystem?

Health: How can we help individuals lead longer, healthier lives?

Education: How can we help more people get more access to better education?

Shelter: How can we help ensure that everyone has a safe place to live?

Everything else: Sometimes the best ideas don’t fit into any category at all.”

$10 million is on the table to fund up to 5 ideas that are being reviewed by advisory board consisting of 7 experts in each of these fields.

I will keep you posted on this one – let’s hope that Google does a bit more than Kevin Rudd has with the ideas from the 2020 Summit (of which I haven’t heard much of!).
